Sophie's Emporium of Potions and Magical Oddities

This is my first game made using Unity where I had to manage both the coding and design of the assets. It's a 2D puzzle game where you brew potions by dropping 2 ingredients in the
boiling cauldron in the hope of unlocking all the recipe and completing your apprenticeship.

Game Concept

Meet Sophie, an apprentice of a magic shop who is tasked with practicing with the ingredients and perfecting all the potion recipes. But the master has hidden away all of the ingredients as a challenge for Sophie. The player will have to help Sophie unlock all the ingredients by deciphering clues and solving puzzles and then successfully brewing all the required potions by following the Master's instruction.

Features

A 2D puzzle game where you brew potions by dropping 2 ingredients in the boiling cauldron in the hope of unlocking all the recipe and completing your apprenticeship. But you have to find all the ingredients hidden in the lair by solving all the puzzles your master has devised to challenge you.

The story is very simple, just keep solving puzzle until you manage to find all the ingredients and unlock all the recipes. But you have to be able to decode the clues provided to solve the puzzles and figure out the right combination for each recipe. The recipes will be recorded in a book so that player knows their progression in the game.

Development

Game Design

The player progresses through the game by unlocking as many recipes as possible. And they can do this by unlocking the puzzles, which will grant them access to more ingredients and hence, even more possible combinations.

However, if they are unable to figure out the puzzles, or decode the combination clues, then it’s impossible to find all the combinations, or the player will have to go through a lengthy trial and error process to figure out all the combinations.

If the player can unlock extremely hard puzzles, then they can unlock rarer ingredients for hard recipes.

But if the player is unable to find the correct combination and just mix random recipes, this will result in a failed recipe, and there is a very high chance of getting a failed recipe if the player just went about figuring out the recipes using trial and error and not try to decode the clues.

Game Look & Feel

Art style

The style will be a little spooky, but still cute and animated, with bright colors and fantastical designs. The intention isn’t to scare away player with scary witchy graphics but make it enjoyable by turning scary/spooky elements into cute designs. I had a lot of fun designing and illustrating the assets for the game, and below are some designs for the results of the potion.

Music/ Sounds

To fit with the cute graphic, the music should be fun and entertaining, with a hint of childishness or mischievousness.
