ORGAN(IC)

Your character is a disgraced scientist who proposed the idea of growing artificial human organs. However, the science community thought you were insane and pulled all funding for your project. Therefore, with all your savings left, you decide to open this operation to prove to the world that your ideas are genius and make a ton of money from it to prove them all wrong.

Game Concept

The goal of this game is to fulfill the fantasy of making quick money by sacrificing an organ (like a kidney), but instead of selling just ONE kidney (your own hopefully), build a sustainable business by growing kidneys (and hearts, liver, lungs, ...) and get rich from humanely harvested organs.

The general concept is to build an underground illegal farm where you grow artificial human organs, and then sell them for money. The gameplay will be a simulation of this concept, where the player participates in the production of the illegal organs and explore the world and story unfolding in their progression.

Features

The player will always have a constant goal which is taking care of their crops (prime objective). The tasks are very simple: plant, nurture, and harvest. For this version of the game, there are a few crops available for planting, some are available immediately upon starting the game, which are starter crops to help the player get to know the farming mechanics. Some other are unlocked by looking around or learning and buying crafting recipes,

But while waiting for the crops to grow, the player can participate in side quests to explore the world and stories, but also to kill time and keep the player from being distracted by making them multitask. But involving multiple features can also confuse the player, so there needs to be a system in place to help the player get familiarized with all the mechanics and enjoy using them. The mechanics that support these goals include:

  • Quest system: Gives player a new quest to do to help the player familiarize with the mechanics and explore the other possibilities of the game

  • Journal system: For the player to keep track of all the instructional and story content so they can check back anytime to remind themselves of everything that they've picked up

  • Recipe crafting: A crafting system to allow the player to unlock more advanced content and helpful tools, the system requires ingredients that the player can acquire from farming or from shopping

  • NPC interaction & dialogue system: To create the illusion of a world in the game, there's  also a list of NPCs that the character can chat with and gives the player tips and info

  • Shopping: The player can purchase interesting items from the online shopping feature, these items can be used for crafting, farming, or decoration

  • Home decoration: This is a purely cosmetic feature that allows the player to purchase furniture and plants and place it around their home to decorate it how they like

  • and much more!

Development

Game Design

For this game, I dived deep into game design theories to see what makes a good game with interesting and compelling mechanics that attracts players. And from my research, I designed my game mechanics accordingly.

Environment Design

The game will take place from within the player’s facility. The player will have a method to communicate with for instructions, transactions and get status reports of their farm. And the design of the player's farm has undergone a few rounds of revision.

Asset Design

The UI style for this game is pixel art because I want to keep it futuristic, fun and quirky, while the game art style is 3D. So here are some examples of the assets used in the game.
